PRESENTATION

Eaux Arts Electroniques ! is the next event proposed by Champ Libre from May 19th till the 23rd in the Craig Pumping Station, situated under the Jacques-Cartier bridge at the corner of Notre-Dame and De Lorimier streets. This event is part of Eaux Vives, culture et savoir pour une mémoire de l’eau, a series of artistic events that will take place in Montreal from October the 1st 2003 till August the 31st of 2004, as part of the International Year of Freshwater 2003 decreed by the UNESCO. Presented by the city of Montreal and the Ministry of Culture and Communications of Quebec, this major event aims to raise the public awareness of this important resource.

With Eaux Arts Électroniques ! Champ Libre wishes to stimulate thinking on the relation between water and architecture on an exceptional site, the Craig Pumping station. This building is a witness of the important relationship existing between Montreal and the St-Laurent River. Works of art, ordered to artists in photography and architecture, will be presented in a slideshow form inside the station. This will transform the station into a true interpretation center of water. This unique and in-situ system of broadcasting, centralized and controlled by computer, will be elaborated in tight collaboration between the artists of the project and a coordinator, specialist of this medium. This event, being concerned with the popular culture of the Centre-Sud district also explores the evolution of the slideshow medium that once belonged to the intimacy of the home, and which now sits on the border between video and photography.
