PRESENTATION
Inaugural events are always driven by the urgency to act.
The first Manifestation Internationale Video et Art Électronique,
organized by Champ Libre in 1993, was no exception to this
rule. The Manifestation was also structured around a pressing
need: to provide Montreal with a place where video and electronic
art can be reflected upon, discussed and exhibited outside
of confusing theoretical and aesthetic "genres"...The
new electronic languages are far more than a simple extension
of "pre-electronic" arts; they are ushering in a
true revolution in human sensibility as well radically transforming
humanity's collective memory.
To date the majority of people who could benefit from the
Manifestation were Montrealers. In order to bypass the centralization
which is characteristic of large events and to develop a collaborative
network with Quebec artist-run centre's, Champ Libre made
a selection from the first Manifestation that will be presented
in artist-run centres who are interested in this initiative.
