ADD
. L’ARCAND DERVICHE DÉRIVATIF
Pierre-André Arcand, La traversée
du désert
performance, Québec , 2004
It is true that he started as a poet. Through
his projects he has progressively moved on and
embraced broader fields. The goal was to find
music in words and to mix this phonetic, lexical
or syntactic musicality with sounds manipulated
live. Henceforth the music became more important
than the text. An Autonomad he has worked in
a variety of fields ranging from copy art to
performance as well as installation, book art,
combinatory literature, audio art and experimental
music.
At the heart of his performances is the Macchina
Ricordi. In Italian this means the "the
machine that remembers." For the first
30 years he used it in an analog form. It invention
made it possible to manipulate sound loops through
the use of a modified tape recorder and a microphone
that served as a pen. Recently, the Macchina
Ricordi was adapted by the Avatar Laboratory
(Quebec) and turned into an high performance
digital instrument in the shape of a program
which now also integrates low resolution video
images.
Pierre André Arcand works mainly with
evolving loops which he accumulates so as to
better deconstruct and modify them and to let
them loose as sentences which he projects in
order confront them and make them neosemic.
His images are the fruit of graphic recuperations
and transformations that he structures during
prepared random semantic improvisation sessions.
This way of operating makes it possible to constantly
discover unknown pleasures, which is quite the
contrary of burying one's head in the sand.
Pierre André Arcand is among those explorers
for whom poetry is not limited to published
texts — he seeks and finds it in the most
trivial acts of everyday life: in the sounds
of the glottis, web pages, the veins of a rock
or on clotheslines.
The project he is proposing for the 6th MIVAEM
will reflect this accumulation that compresses
time, grinds information and by way of mixing
and superposition produces a dense sonic mass.
These activities are the mark of this singular
artist who has achieved wide international recognition
and barley any at home.

Epileptic :
Following Pierre-André Arcand's appearance
at Champ libre, recording company DAME is
launching his album, Atlas Epileptic, the
artist's first release on the independent
record label Ambiances Magnétiques.
This title combines an audio CD and a video
CD-ROM, in the vein of audio art as well as
acoustic, electronic and digital musics. Arcand
authors thus a document bursting with invention
and poetry.
