LE DOCUMENTAIRE VIDÉOSCOPIE ENTRE AU MUSÉE

Le documentaire VIDÉOSCOPIE réalisé en 1996 par François Cormier – fondateur et directeur artistique de Champ Libre - a été acquis récemment par le Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal. Ce documentaire est une oeuvre à la fois éducative et artistique qui révèle la démarche plurielle et engagée de certains artistes/penseurs exprimant avec sensibilité leurs réflexions sur l’art et les nouvelles technologies. On y voit par séquences des entrevues d’artistes et des extraits de leurs oeuvres. Les participants sont : CHRISTINE ROSS – Québec, IRIT BATSRY – Israël, ADAM COHEN – États-Unis, DENNIS DAY – Canada, KRISTINE DIEKMAN - États-Unis, MARKO PELEJHAN - Slovénie, ALAIN PELLETIER - Québec, FRANCISCO RUIZ DE INFANTE - Espagne, GIANNI TOTI - Italie. Ce projet a été co-produit par PRIM - centre de production en art médiatique à Montréal et Champ Libre. Le projet a reçu l’appui du Conseil des Arts du Canada et du programme Étalez votre science du gouvernement du Québec. La nouvelle version 2006 du documentaire est sous-titrée français/anglais. THE DOCUMENTARY VIDEOSCOPIE ENTERS THE MUSEUM


The documentary VIDEOSCOPIE directed by François Cormier in 1996– founder and artistic director of Champ Libre – was recently acquired by the Musée d’art contemporain of Montréal. This documentary is both an educative and artistic work that reveals the plural and engaged creative process of certain artists/thinkers expressing with sensibility their thoughts on art and new technologies. Here are seen sequences of artist interviews and displayed excerpts of their work. The artists are: CHRISTINE ROSS – Quebec. IRIT BATSRY – Israel, ADAM COHEN – United States, DENNIS DAY – Canada, KRISTINE DIEKMAN – United States, MARKO PELEJHAN – Slovenia, ALAIN PELLETIER - Quebec, FRANCISCO RUIX DE INFANTE – Spain, GIANNI TOTI – Italy. This project was co-produced by PRIM – new media art production center and Champ Libre. The project received the support of the Canadian council for the arts and the program Etalez votre science of the Quebec government. The 2006 new version of the documentary is subtitled French/English. 7E BIENNALE CHAMP LIBRE;
DE L'ART INVISIBLE!

Des centaines de projets artistiques ont été soumis à Champ Libre le 1er février dernier pour sa 7e biennale CITÉ INVISIBLE/INVISIBLE CITY – 7E MIVAEM - qui se déroulera sur le site de la Grande Bibliothèque à Montréal du 20 septembre au 1er octobre 2006. Les comités de sélection, constitués de différents professionnels issus du milieu des arts et de la communauté ont procédés à Montréal à la sélection des oeuvres qui seront diffusées lors de l'événement de septembre prochain. Plusieurs artistes et architectes d’ici et d’ailleurs créent également à la demande de Champ Libre des installations inédites sur le thème de CITÉ INVISIBLE qui s’intègreront in situ au site de la Grande Bibliothèque. L’organisation de la 7e Manifestation Internationale Vidéo et Art Électronique, Montréal (MIVAEM) va bon train et l’équipe de Champ Libre et de la Grande Bibliothèque travaillent main dans la main pour que cette grande manifestation artistique d’avant garde unique en son genre soit rassembleuse et ouverte à une audience la plus large qui soit. Tous les artistes ayant soumis à l’appel de projet recevront une réponse quant à leur inclusion dans la programmation d’ici le 15 mai 2006. La scénographie de l'événement sera conçue en collaboration avec L'Atelier In Situ de Montréal; Stéphane Pratte et Annie Lebel architectes.

7TH CHAMP LIBRE BIENNIAL;
INVISIBLE ART!

Hundreds of art projects have been submitted to Champ Libre as of February 1st 2006 for its 7th biennale CITÉ INVISIBLE/INVISIBLE CITY – 7th MIVAEM - which will take place on the site of the Grande Bibliothèque in Montreal from September 20th until October 1st 2006. Selection committees consisting of different art and community recognized professionals of Quebec will soon proceed to the selection of a number of works to be presented during this event of next September. Many artists and architects from here and elsewhere are also creating upon Champ Libre’s request unpublished installations on the theme: INVISIBLE CITY that will integrate in situ with the site of the Grande Bibliothèque. The organization of the 7th Manifestation Internationale Vidéo et Art Électronique, Montreal (MIVAEM) is on it’s way and the team of Champ Libre and the of the Grande Bibliothèque are working hand in hand so this great avant-garde artistic manifestation unique in its kind be gathering and opened to an audience as broad as could be. Every artist who submitted to our call for projects will receive an answer regarding their inclusion in the program before the 15th of May 2006. election committees consisting of different art and community recognized professionals of Quebec met recently in Montreal for the selection of a number of works to be presented during this event of next September. The stagecraft will be realized in collaboration with the Montreal architecture workshop Atelier In Situ; Annie Lebel and Stéphane Pratte.

D'OÙ VIENT LE NOM CHAMP LIBRE?

L’organisme Champ Libre (fondé en 1992) qui œuvre maintenant dans les domaines de l’image en mouvement, des arts électroniques, de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme a emprunté son nom à l’histoire récente du Québec. En effet au moment de la fondation de l’organisme en 1992, François Cormier l’un des co-fondateurs, cherchait un nom à donner à ce nouvel espace de réflexion et de diffusion artistique qui émergeait à partir de l’effervescence de rencontres avec d’autres co-fondateurs issus du milieu de l’architecture, des arts visuels, de la philosophie, de la littérature et de l’urbanisme. À cette époque ce collectif définissait son action entre autres par le besoin de regrouper les forces de ses co-fondateurs et proposer de nouvelles façons de voir, d’entendre et de comprendre. C’est au hasard d’une visite dans une librairie de livres usagés du plateau Mont-Royal à Montréal en 1991 que fut découverte une édition ancienne et originale de la revue de cinéma québécoise CHAMP LIBRE ayant existé dans les années soixante-dix le temps de quelques numéros. L’édition no 1 de cette revue clamait en 1971 que : …il consiste à donner aux colonisés que sont les Québécois les images d’eux-mêmes qui leur manquent, à reconquérir un reflet volé et à proposer des schémas d’analyse et de lutte. Inutile de dire que CHAMP LIBRE participe à ce combat. C’est la force éditoriale de ces propos et le désir, la volonté de faire revivre le nom inspirant de cette revue de cinéma d’auteur qui a fait naître dans sa continuité le nom de l’organisme CHAMP LIBRE que l’on connaît aujourd’hui.

WHAT'S THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME CHAMP LIBRE?

The organization Champ Libre (founded in 1992) which now specializes in the fields of the moving image, of electronic arts, of architecture and of urbanism has borrowed its name from Quebec’s recent history. Thus at the moment of foundation of the organization in 1992, François Cormier one of the co-founders of Champ Libre, was searching for a name to give to this new space of reflection and of artistic presentation that was emerging from within the turmoil of meetings with other co-founders coming from the fields of architecture, visual arts, philosophy, literature and urbanism. At the time this collective defined its action among others by the need to group the forces of its co-founders and propose new ways of seeing, of listening and of understanding. It is while randomly visiting a used bookstore of the Mount Royal neighborhood in Montreal in 1991 that was discovered an old and original edition of the Quebecois cinema periodical CHAMP LIBRE that had existed in the 70’s only for a few issues. The number 1 issue of this periodical proclaimed in 1971 that: … it means to give to the colonized that are the Quebecois the images of themselves that they lack, to recover a stolen reflection and to propose schemes of analysis and of fight. It goes without saying that CHAMP LIBRE participates in this battle.

It is the editorial force of these sayings and the desire, the will to make the inspiring name of this cinema periodical that brought to life in its continuity the name of the organization CHAMP LIBRE that we know today.

STATION DE POMPAGE CRAIG: UN PROJET ARTISTIQUE DANS LA COMMUNAUTÉ

C’est dans une optique de développement durable, de vision urbaine et de consolidation de l’identité du quartier Centre-Sud à Montréal (Arrondissement Ville-Marie) que Champ Libre développe actuellement le projet : L’état des lieux; Centre d’interprétation virtuel de la station de pompage Craig situé sous le pont Jacques Cartier. Ce site Internet interactif jouxté d’ateliers d’art électronique fera participer les habitants du quartier (jeunes et adultes). Il a pour but de rassembler l’énergie et l’imaginaire nécessaires à la constitution d’une identité manquante pour ce morceau de ville et de reconnecter la station de pompage Craig avec le quartier Centre-Sud et ses résidents en vue de sa renaissance et d’une réflexion sur sa vocation future. Champ Libre souhaite devenir par son action artistique une voix incontournable pour l’avenir de ce bâtiment industriel historique. Le site Web de ce projet sera inauguré et lancé à l’automne 2006. Rappelons que Champ libre a réhabilité à l’été 2002 après 40 ans d’abandon la station de pompage Craig en vue de sa 5e biennale CITÉ DES ONDES qui s’est tenue en ce lieu en septembre 2002 et qui a attiré plus de 5000 visiteurs en 7 jours. La station de pompage Craig représente le témoignage irremplaçable d’une infrastructure fondamentale dans l’histoire des villes depuis le XIXe siècle, notamment pour Montréal dans ses efforts consentis pour contrôler les inondations du fleuve Saint-Laurent.

Champ Libre a reçu pour ce projet l’appui financier de plusieurs partenaires dont le Conseil des Arts du Canada, l’Arrondissement Ville-Marie, le Fonds Jeunesse Québec et le Cirque du Soleil.

CRAIG PUMPING STATION: AN ARTISTIC PROJECT IN THE COMMUNITY

It is with a perspective of sustainable development, urban vision and consolidation of the Centre-Sud neighborhood in Montréal’s (Ville-Marie borough) identity that Champ Libre develops the project L’Etat des lieux, virtual center of interpretation of the Craig Pumping Station located under the Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montreal. This interactive website complemented with workshops of electronic art will have the inhabitants of the neighborhood participate (teenagers and adults). It has as a goal to gather the energy and imagination necessary for the constitution of a missing identity for this part of the city and of reconnecting the Craig pumping station with the Centre-Sud neighborhood and its residents in view of a its rebirth and a reflection on its future vocation. Champ Libre wishes to become by its artistic action an essential voice for the future of this historical industrial building. The website of this project will be launched in the fall of 2006. Let us recall that Champ Libre rehabilitated in the summer of 2002 after 40 years of abandonment, the Craig pumping station, in view of its 5th biennale CITÉ DES ONDES that was held on the premises in September 2002 and attracted over 5000 visitors in 7 days. The Craig pumping station represents the irreplaceable testimony of a fundamental infrastructure in the history of cities since the 19th Century, notably for Montreal in its efforts consented to control the flooding of the St. Lawrence River.

La première soirée bénéfice de Champ Libre initialement prévue le 11 avril 2006 a été reportée en 2007, coïncidant ainsi avec la célébration des 15 ans d’existence de l’organisme. L’activité marquera cet anniversaire par une série d’activités artistiques d’avant-garde qui relateront les réalisations de l’organisme depuis sa fondation en 1992. Les détails de cette soirée bénéfice et de son comité organisateur seront annoncés à l’automne 2006. FUNDRAISING EVENT 2007: CHAMP LIBRE, SOON 15 YEARS!

The first fundraising evening of Champ Libre initially scheduled on April 11th 2006 has been postponed until 2007, thus coinciding with the celebration of the organization’s 15 years of existence. The activity will mark this anniversary by a series of artistic avant-garde activities that will relate the history of the organization since its foundation in 1992. The details of this fundraising evening will be announced in the fall of 2006.
